Dermal Fillers In Bournemouth

A dermal filler can be used for two main purposes:

  • To add volume to parts of your face such as your lips, chin or nose, or
  • It can also be used to treat wrinkles

In this article, we will explain both in detail.

Dermal fillers have become very popular treatment because they are both considered very safe and because the results are normally very good.

A dermal filler treatment is also very quick, and normally requires no or very little downtime, and no or few side effects. Many of our clinets come during their lunch break, and are back at work half an hour later.

What Is A Dermal Filler?

A dermal filler is simply a liquid that is injected into your skin in order to increse the volume of that local area of your skin.

Dermal fillers can come in many kinds of materials and hardness, but the type of filler that will be chosen for you, will depend on what you want to achieve. Do you want to add volume to your lips? Do you have certain wrinkles that you want to treat? How permanent do you want the results to be?

However, the most commonly used fillers today are fillers based on something called hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that your body is already producing naturally.

Collagen can also be used as a filler, but it is not used as frequently anymore because hyaluronic acid is safer overall better.

Filler injections of fat can also be utilzed, but this is also becoming less and less common. We are normally getting better results with hyaluronic fillers.

Dermal fillers normally lasts only temporarily. There are cases in which we can administer a permanent implant, but this is normally only for special cases.

How To Remove Wrinkles With A Dermal Filler?

As you get older, your skin will normally lose volume. In fact, it is not uncommon to lose up to 80% of the volume of your skin by the time you have hit old age.

This you actually lose is mainly collagen and elastin. On top of that, your body’s loses its ability to produce these substances as you age.

But this loss is not just due to age.

Other factors such as lack of sleep, stress, a bad diet, smoking, and excessive sunlight will all normally chip away at your collagen and elastin.

What are collagen and elastin?

Collagen is a protein that provides your skin with strength and structure. It basically keeps the body together. It is the most abundant protein in your body, and is found virtually everywhere.

Elastin on the other hand, is an elastic protein that is found in your skin and other tissue. Because it is elastic, it enables your skin to stretch and then return to its original state.

Therefore: Collagen provides structure and form to your skin, and elastin gives it flexibility.

You have probably noticed many times already..

That the skin on the face of an elderly person has often lost significant volume, and in some cases it is almost as if the skin is just a thin layer attached to the bones.

By injecting a dermal filler into the skin where you have lost collagen and elastin, you can restore this volume.

And this is how a dermal filler can make wrinkles disappear:

When you regain volume, the visible skin on your face will be pushed up and stretched. And your wrinkles will also be stretched out. And when stretched they will become less pronouced. When stretche enough, they will disappear (take a look at the illustration above to get a visual impression of this).

By the way, don’t confuse a dermal filler with a Botox injection.

Both injected into the skin, and both can be used to treat wrinkles. Botox reduces wrinkles by relaxing muscle contractions which in turn stops wrinkle formation. Dermal fillers simply contain filler material to add new volume.

How Are Dermal Fillers Used To Increase Volume?

In addition to being used for treating wrinkles, dermal fillers can also be used to add volume to particular parts of your face.

For instance if you want fuller lips, you can inject a lip filler into your lips which will increase your lip volume.

Deral fillers are also often used to add volume to the cheekbone area and the cheeks in genereal. A cheek filler works in the same way as other fillers by simply adding volume to this local area.

A treatment that has become increasingly popular, is a nose filler. This is also often called a non-surgical nose job. If you have a hump on your nose that you don’t like, this can in many cases be treated (or rather concealed) with a nose filler injection.

In additon, dermal fillers can be made to an number of areas of your face for the purpose of increasing volume.

Dermal Filler – Before And After Comparison

The before and after comparision of a dermal filler treatment can be impressive.

For instance, with a lip filler you will normally see very noticeable positive differences. Lips will normally be fuller, symmetric and plump.

With a nose filler, the curve of the nose can be changed to beome fully straight.

And the effect from dermal fillers are often practically immediate. Therefore, you are likely to see significant changes right after the treatment.

We therefore often advice clients to get a small amount of filler first, and then add to this at the next appointment. This will give a gradual change and also reduce the risk of wanting to undo the treatment.

What Is The Cost Of A Dermal Filler Injection?

First of all, the cost depends on the material that is being used, and who is making the injection.

But you will find that most skin care clinics in the U.K. charge anywhere from £250 to £800 for one injection of dermal filler.

At TreatMyWrinkles Bournemouth, we charge £235 for a single injection, and £190 for a second injection.

You find the details of our dermal filler costs here.

What Wrinkles Do We Use Dermal Fillers For?

There are a number of lines, wrinkles and individual concerns that can be treated using a dermal filler. That said, the wrinkles we treat most often with fillers are the following:

What Are Differetnt Dermal Filler Brands?

There are a number of different brands of dermal fillers, and every year there are new ones coming.

One reason why there are so many different brand (other than fillers being very popular), is that there are different kinds of fillers that are used for different conditions. For instance, they come in different hardness and are made of different components.

Some are very similar, but have subtle differences that make them appropriate for different purposes.

Some fillers are best suited as lip fillers, while others for other parts of your face.

They also last for different lengths. Some normally last for 6 months to a year, while others can be semipermanent. That said, these are some of the most used dermal filler brands:

  • Juvederm
  • Restylane
  • Sculptra
  • Perlane
  • Radiesse

How Should I Get Ready For A Dermal Filler?

There are no major preparations for the treatment, and you can live as normal before the treatment. However, there are a few items we would like you to be careful with.

We recommend that you do not take blood-thinning medication during the 2 days before the treatment. By the way, many painkillers are blood thinning.

We also advise that you don’t drink alcohol during these two days. Alcohol is also blood thinning.

The reason why we don’t want you to take these blood thinning agents, is that this can potentially cause bruising and swelling around the injections.

You find more information about how to prepare for the treatment here.

How Will The Actual Dermal Filler Treatment Be?

If it is your first time, it’s normal to be nervous.

So the first thing we will do is just to welcome you and make you feel comfortable. We won’t start until you are comforable and ready.

What we like to do is to start by explaining exactly how the treatment works and what we will do. Then you understand each step of the treatment.

When its time to get started, we will first cleanse your skin where the injections will be made with an antibacterial liquid. This is just to be on the safe side.

Then we will add a numbing cream to the same areas. This will numb your skin and help you feel no or very little discomfort from the injections. It takes about 15 minutes for this cream to work.

When 15 minutes have passed, we will inject the dermal fillers. This will be over in about two minutes.

And just to be safe and to ensure that things went as planned, we will keep you and monitor you just for a few minutes. That’s it! 👍

If you want to understand more about what will happen on the day of the treatment, you find more information here.

Anything I Need To Do After The Dermal Filler Treatment?

You can go on with your life pretty much as normal after the dermal filler injections.

However, there are a few ‘things’ we recommend that you do not do.

We encourage you to not take blood-thinning medications, and alcohol for about 2 days after the treatment. By the way, many painkillers are blood-thinning.

Why do we encourage this?

The reason is that blood thinners can potentially increase bruising where the injections were made,

Just ask us or your doctor if you are uncertain about your medication. 👍

Also, please be careful not to touch the areas where the injections were made for about 2 days.

If you apply pressure to the injection areas early on, this can cause the injections to shift to other areas.

We also recommend that you are careful with strenuous physical activity for about 2 days. This can also potentially move the injections to areas where they were not intended.

And lastly, we also suggest that you are careful with the sunand high heat (sauna, very hot showers, etc.) for 2 days. The reason is that strong heat can expand blood vessels and therefore potentially increase bruising.

How Long Does The Dermal Filler Procedure Take?

The entire procedure from when you first step into the clinic until you walk out, should normally take no more than 30 minutes.

Hence, you can come for a quick lunch-time appointment and be back at work shortly thereafter.

Does The Dermal Filler Treatment Hurt?

Before we make the filler injection, we will apply a numbing cream to the area where the injection will be made. This will numb your skin so that you shouldn’t feel any pain.

You will still feel the pressure from the needle, but there should be no or minimal pain. Most people only feel a small degree of discomfort from the treatment.

How Soon Will I See Results From The Dermal Fillers?

You will see results from the dermal fillers immediately. Which means that the wrinkles that you had will already be less visible as you walk out of the clinic.

However the complete picture will show over time as your skin adjusts to the fillers.

For How Long Does A Dermal Fillers Last?

In most cases, we will give you a dermal filler that has a finite life. Only in very rare cases will we recommend a permanent one.

And fillers of different materials have different life. Some last for just a couple of months, while others can last for years.

However, the most common fillers will last anywhere from 4-6 months and upwards to about a year.

Will My Face Look Unnatural After The Injections?

Some people may be concerned about getting a ‘frozen’ look and not be able to make facial expressions.

However, this concern is more appropriate for a Botox injection rather than a dermal filler injection.

Botox paralyses muscles, fillers do not. Dermal fillers only increase volume. Therefore, you need not fear a frozen look or anything similar.

As long as the filler is injected properly by a certified and licenced practicioner, there should be no complications. At our Bournemouth clinic we are fully licenced and certified.

Are There Any Side-Effects From Dermal Fillers?

Side-effect may occur, but the good news is that they are normally very mild, and they normally disappear completely within 2-3 days.

It is common to see some redness and swelling where the injections were made. These areas will often also remain tender for some time after the treatment.

Some people may also experience ligt pain, itching, or bruising around the area of the injections.

In the event you experience side-effects that you are worried about, please contact us.

Is Dermal Filler Safe?

Yes, dermal fillers are considered to be a very safe treatment with very few risks.

That is needless to say if you get the dermal filler injection administered by a licensed and qualified practicioner, like the ones at our Bournemouth clinic. Should you on the other hand get a filler treatment from someone who does not have the required education and knowledge, this may come with risk.

Also, the most commonly used dermal fillers today are made of hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that your body already naturally produce, so it is not something new for your body.

Also, if you get a filler based on hyaluronic acid, we can in most cases reverse the filler with an anti-agent. This means that the filler will dissolve totally.

How Popular Are Dermal Fillers?

In the UK alone, we estimate that several hundred thousand dermal filler treatments are made every year. Globally, in excess of 10 million treatments are made annually.
