Microneedling In Southampton

Microneedling is a skincare treatment that promotes skin and collagen regrowth through activating your body’s natural healing response. It is therefore also sometimes called collagen induction therapy. It is normally performed on your face, but it can also be done elsewhere on your body.

Microneedling can treat any of the following conditions:

  • Reduce scars (e.g. acne scars, burn scars and surgical scars)
  • Diminish enlarged pores
  • Reduce dark spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Make the skin smoother
  • Increase skin elasticity
  • Reduce stretch marks
  • Improve sun damaged skin
  • Remove fine lines and minor wrinkles
  • Improve Rosacea

At TreatMyWrinkles Southampton, microneedling has become an increasingly popular skincare treatment. Many of our clients favour it because it is less expensive than other treatments such as laser, Botox and dermal fillers

This treatment is quick, and you will normally not need any downtime. Also, there are very few, or no, side effects.

And we also give you a free collagen face mask after the treatment.

Let’s learn more about microneedling. 👍

Most Affordable Microneedling In Southampton

What Is Microneedling?

When performing this treatment at TreatMyWrinkles Southampton, we use a tool that looks like an oversized pen. This tool has a large number of tiny needles inside. And when we apply it gently to your skin, the needles penetrate the very outer layer of your skin to cause tiny wounds.

We can adjust the length of the needles so they penetrate up to 3mm of your skin. We use different depths depending on what condition we treat.

And why is it good to create these micro wounds in your skin?

Because it forces your skin to restore and heal itself.

And when your skin starts to heal these tiny wounds, this promotes new production of collagen. This in turn means that your skin starts to regenerate and restore itself. We can basically stimulate your body to exchange your old skin for new skin.

Btw, what is collagen?

Collagen is a protein that provides your skin with strength and structure. It is the most abundant protein in your body, and it essentially keeps your body together.

You therefore need collagen in order to maintain your skin youthful, firm and smooth.

Are There Different Kinds Of Microneedling?

Yes there are. There are 3 main kinds of microneedling.

The first type, which is also what this article is about, is traditional microneedling (also sometimes called mechanical microneedling).

The second type of microneedling is called Microneedling with PRP. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. This treatment applies platelets, which are components found in your blood. The addition of PRP from the blood can make microneedling more effective.

The third and last form for microneedling is called radiofrequency microneedling.

This is traditional microneedling + simultaneous radiowave treatment. At the same time as this device rolls over your skin and creates microscopic cellular injuries (traditional microneedling), it also sends radio waves deeper into your skin. By doing this, radiofrequency microneedling is able to simultaneously stimulate collagen production on the surface of your skin, and also deeper inside the various layers of your skin. The end result is a more wholesome and more effective treatment.

How Long Does Microneedling Take In Southampton

How Long Does The Microneedling Treatment Take?

Getting a microneedling treatment is a relatively quick procedure, as the actual microneedling only takes about 20-30 minutes.

However, in order to minimise discomfort as much as possible, we will apply a numbing cream to your skin before we start. This cream will need about 15-20 minutes before it becomes active, so we have to wait for this before we can start.

All in all, the treatment will therefore take about one hour.

How Soon Will I See Results From The Microneedling Treatment?

Most clients start to see improvements after about 10 days of the first treatment.

However, it is important to understand that regrowth of skin is a process that takes time. And particularly if there are large areas of skin that need to be regrown, or if the skin is severely damaged. Therefore, it can take several months to see the full and complete results of the procedure.

And in order to get the best results, we recommend 3-6 treatments.

Microneedling Aftercare Recommendations

Microneedling Aftercare

First of all, there will normally not be any downtime. So you can go back to work or continue with your day, as you otherwise would have.

However, since hundreds of tiny wounds were made in your skin, it is normal that this skin will be somewhat red and sensitive. This will normally go away within 24 hours.

Your skin will normally work rapidly to heal the wounds, so you will typically start to see improvements within 10 days. And after 14-21 days, you should normally see significant improvements.

We advise that you are careful with strong sun exposure, makeup and lotions for 2-3 days.

Washing should ideally be done with water only, for the first few days.

Also, we recommend that you stay away from very high heat for 2-3 days as well, as this expands blood vessels and can cause bruising.

When we perform microneedling we provoke an inflammatory response. This is how we stimulate collagen production. We therefore advise against taking anti-inflammatory medications, as this would interrupt that process.

Microneedling can be performed every 4 to 6 weeks, and normally 3-6 treatments is enough to see optimal results.

Great Results From Microneedling

For How Long Do The Results From Microneedling Last?

How long the results from microneedling will last, will depend on several factors, most importantly the condition you are treating and the rate of your collagen production.

For instance, if you are treating thermal burn scars, acne scars, or surgical scars, the results can be permanent. Meaning, a few sessions of microneedling treatment can remove your scars completely and for good.

If you are treating stretch marks, the results can also be permanent. So if you come for treatment and this removes the stretch marks, they are likely to be permanently gone. That said, should you gain weight, become pregnant or otherwise change body shape, stretch marks are likely to reappear.

Should you intend to treat fine lines and wrinkles with microneedling, you can expect the results to last for about 6 months. This will however depend on your production of collagen. The more new collagen your skin naturally produces, the longer the results will last. If your collagen production is very good, you may expect to see the results last for up to one year.

If the aim of the treatment is to improve your skin tone or the condition called melasma (grey skin), the results will also depend on your collagen production. As a rule of thumb, if you are 35 or younger, you can expect the results to last for about a year. If you are above the age of 50, you can expect the results to last about 6 months. These are just rough estimates however, and if you are super healthy and have good collagen production, you will probably do better than these estimates.

For treating enlarged pores, the results tend to be somewhat shorter. This will also depend on your collagen production, but you can normally expect the effects to last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

If you want to remove or reduce sunspots, the effects can be permanent.

Side-Effects From Microneedling

Are There Any Side Effects From Microneedling?

Microneedling is considered to be a treatment with none or very few side effects. Also, any side effects that may occur, normally go away within 24-48 hours.

The most common side effect is slight skin irritation. This is caused as your skin became perforated and as it starts the healing process. Other possible side effects could include:

  • Light swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Dryness
  • Flaking of the skin

Should you experience other side effects, or should any of the above last for more than 48 hours, please contact us.

Safe Microneedling At TreatMyWrinkles Southampton

Is Microneedling Safe?

Yes, microneedling is considered a very safe aesthetic treatment with very few risks. As you see from the above section about side effects, there is very little risk of any serious side effects. And the mild ones that you might experience, typically go away within 24-48 hours.

This is backed up by various scientific studies on microneedling.

If you are interested in learning more about microneedling safety, here is a systematic review on microneedling from 2018, and here is another review published in 2021.

Both systematic reviews found the same: Microneedling is a very safe skincare treatment.
