What Is Radio Frequency Microneedling?
Radio frequency microneedling is similar to traditional microneedling, as it creates hundreds of microscopical wounds in your skin with tiny needles.
But there is one key difference:
The tool we use for radio frequency microneedling, also send high-intensity radio waves into your skin.
So at the same time as the needles penetrate your skin, radio waves do the same.
These waves reach deep into your skin where they stimulate growth of skin cells, and particularly of collagen.
This way you get a double effect:
Firstly, from the wounds that the needles make on the outer layers of your skin, or rather from the healing of these wounds.
And secondly, from the deeper growth stimulation from the radio waves.

The following are the main positives and negatives of radio frequency microneedling:
Pros:

Radio frequency microneedling offers a more wholesome treatment than traditional microneedling, as it stimulates collagen growth both on the surface and deep inside the skin.

It can offer a permanent solution for conditions such as removal of scars, stretchmarks, sunspots, etc.

There is no injection of any substance into your skin (as is the case for Botox and dermal fillers).

There is no (or minimal) downtime, so you can continue your normal activities immediately.

The treatment is considered suitable for all skin types and tones.

It can be performed on almost any area of your body.

Radio frequency microneedling is less expensive than laser resurfacing, and may produce similar results for many conditions.
Negatives (cons):

It is more expensive than traditional microneedling.

The results are not immediate. It normally takes 10-14 days to see the first results.

You will also normally need 3-5 treatments to see optimal results. This means that it can take a few months for the final results to be achieved.

For people with very sensitive skin, the treatment can involve some discomfort, even after we apply a numbing cream.
How Long Does A Radio Frequency Microneedling Treatment Take?
The treatment normally takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on the area and condition you want treated.
Since we will be penetrating your skin a few hundred times with tiny needles, this can cause discomfort. Therefore, we can apply a numbing cream before we start the treatment. However, many clients get the treatment without the numbing cream, as the discomfort is tolerable
By the way, it takes about 20-30 minutes for this numbing cream to kick in.
If you choose to not get the numbing cream, we could be done in less than 30 minutes.
What To Do After The Radio Frequency Microneedling Treatment?
During this treatment, we create hundreds (or potentially thousands) of microscopical wounds in your skin. And in addition, we send radio waves deeper into your skin.
Therefore, it may very well happen that for the next 24 hours, your skin will be a little red and also more sensitive than normal.
That said, it is still a very mild treatment and most clients require no downtime at all. So in most cases, you can go back to work immediately, or continue your day as you otherwise would have.
However:
We advise that you do not spend time in the sun, nor use makeup and lotions on the treated skin, for 48 hours.
Washing should ideally be done with water only for the first day or two.
We recommend that you stay away from very high heat, such as hot showers, saunas, etc. for 48 hours as well. High heat expands blood vessels and this can cause bruising.
If you experience swelling or discomfort, you may apply ice packs or apply something cold. We suggest that you do not use ice directly on the skin, as this can potentially cause infections.
When we perform microneedling we make your body produce an inflammatory response. This is how we stimulate collagen production. We therefore recommend that you do not take any anti-inflammatory medications 3 days before or 3 days after the treatment, as this would counter the treatment.
Please note that tiny scabs may appear during the first 3 days or so after the treatment. These may – and should – remain for several days as they are natural to the healing process. We advise that you do not touch or scratch them. Please let them shed naturally.
What Are The Side Effects From Radio Frequency Microneedling?
The good news is that radio frequency microneedling normally has no or very few side effects.
And in addition, any potential side effects normally disappear within 24-48 hours.
However, one side effect that some clients experience is slight skin irritation. This is normal, as we cause trauma to your skin when we make all these tiny wounds.
You may experience one or more of these potential side effects:

Flaking of the skin

Is Radio Frequency Microneedling Safe?
Radio frequency microneedling is considered to be a very safe skin care treatment. It is approved by a number of governmental health organizations (such as the FDA in the United States).
In the above section about side effects, you also see that there are only very minor risks of any grave side effects.
This is also supported by scientific research studies on radio frequency microneedling.
If you are interested in learning more about the safety of radio frequency microneedling, this research report evaluated 600 treatments and concluded that it is a ‘very safe procedure’.

Does Radio Frequency Microneedling Work?
Is microneedling combined with radio frequency any better than traditional microneedling? Does this treatment actually work?
Instead of just saying ‘yes it works’, let’s have a look at what science has found about the effectiveness of this treatment.
Is radio frequency microneedling able to improve acne scars for instance?
This scientific study found that out of 31 patients with grade 3 and 4 acne scars, 80.6% showed improvement by 2 grades and 19.4% showed improvement by 1 grade.
And this research study found that: ‘Improvement of at least 1 acne scar grade was noted in 11 of 19 patients (57.9%) after 1 month, and in 9 of 9 patients (100%) after 3 months.’
What about making the skin look smoother and removing wrinkles?
This research report found that radio frequency microneedling made the skin look better, reduced wrinkles around the eyes, and also that these effects were longer lasting than those from Botox injections.
And this scientific research study found that it can tighten loose facial skin.
What about reducing pore size and improving skin texture?
This research study found that radio frequency microneedling: ‘Provides a highly effective minimally invasive treatment for acne scars, skin texture improvement, and pore size reduction, with a short downtime and high subjective satisfaction rates.’
